A weekend in Outer Space
Went to Greenbelt for the first time this year. Made such a nice change from Soul Survivor. Such a different attitude at GB...diverse, accepting, willing to engage. Felt to me like the opposite of SS, which is great if you want to jump around and sing the same song over and over..but kind of scary if you don't fit the mould. Three years ago at SS I ended up in a couple of sessions where we prayed to be healed (well, were supposed to). This year at GB there was a series of events celebrating what is apparently wrong with me! The Outer Space stuff was brilliant. Great bunch of people all sharing some serious stuff, supporting each other. The OS Eucharist was lovely, but the best bit of GB for me was in the showing of For the Bible Tells Me So. To say they had technical difficulties is a bit of an understatement! so on the fourth restart of the first scene, in which some Southern US woman damning homosexuals gets a pie in the face at a press conference, the entire audience started chanting...PIE! PIE! PIE! PIE!....YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! was hilarious.
Was lovely to spend a weekend with Alison. We did loads of stuff...another good thing about GB...loads that interested us, wide variety of stuff...talks by Yancey and McClaren... Q+A and films of Aardman Animations.. God in Sci Fi...Outer Space Panels and stuff.
Karen and Graeme joined us on the Sunday...for the world's most surreal communion service...the highlight of which was singing 'Here comes the Sun'....in the rain! We put a brave face on it! ...and wet ourselves laughing as we clutched our ribbons!

From the OS session 'My mother had a brother'.... TGF the footprints of those that have gone before us.
However tough I think it is at church or in school...I am probably living in the most accepting country, in the most accepting time so far. I hope that thanks to those that continue to be brave enough to stand up for who they are things will get better and better...to the point where its not an issue.
EDIT: Heck!!!! I can't believe I forgot to mention the Tiny Tea Tent!!!! This was the most fantastic place...very hippie...played the Beach Boys mostly...and something Alison sang along to about tiptoeing through a garden or some such nonsense! Anyway... on the first evening we stumbled across it, and on a whim of not fancying a coffee I tried the Hot Apple and Cinnamon.... WOW.... this stuff is the yummiest thing with twigs in ever invented!!! we lived on it. By 11am on Tues, whilst suffering Death by Powerpoint I was suffering A+C withdrawal symptoms! ....Alison had already gone to town to get some syrup and twigs by then!
